Happy new week! As promised I am here to show you my breakfast nook makeover. It’s finished!! It’s a small space but it’s part of a much bigger makeover going on. There are lots of photos so let’s get started.
Here’s what it looks like now.
And here’s a before picture.
Not only did this space get a makeover, I got a new camera too. You can see that the quality of the before pictures aren’t great.
The walls were a charcoal color before the makeover. We painted them in Benjamin Moore Crystalline. In some light it looks green, in other light it looks bluish aqua and certain times of the day it looks gray. I love it! In fact, I love it so much we’re painting the entire first floor in the same color.
I’ve had this antique typewriter for ages and have always kept it on a side table or desk. I decided to show off the graphics of the numbers and keys better by hanging it on the wall.
I love projects that I don’t have to spend much money on. My pillows didn’t cost me a thing. I already had the beautiful rooster pillow that I got from Hazelnut Deux.
I pulled the green fabric out of my stash and stuffed it with poly fill that I had instead of buying a pillow form.
The other two pillows were the most fun to create. Jen Rizzo recently posted a free bird and flower printable that she created. The colors in her design were just the colors I was using to accessorize.
So I saved her printable and played around with it to create two different pillow designs. Then I printed the designs using muslin ironed onto freezer paper and my inkjet printer. Once again I stuffed them with poly fill and as a result they cost me nothing.
Sitting on top of the old school desk they’re the perfect pillows for my breakfast nook. You can see the before and after of the school desk makeover in this post.
I hope you enjoyed seeing all the changes. Thanks for stopping by!

Your new nook is very welcoming, Ann. I LOVE your choice of wall paint. And the typewriter looks so interesting like that.
Thank you Nancy! I am loving it as well!
Hi Ann,
In the past, I have had a wall color that changes through-out the day and I like that, too. I love your new color and I think, while the earlier charcoal was dramatic, that this new color is some how happier. I’m going to make a note of your new color for the next time I live in a house. Everything is fabulous and as a former secretary, i love the typewriter on the wall. You are the first on that idea, I think!
-Ginene
Hi Ginene! Funny you should describe the color as happier. I was just telling my husband that the new color has changed my mood and makes me feel lighter and happier! I was also a secretary, for 11 years. Another thing we have in common! The idea to put the typewriter on the wall just hit me one day when I was looking around for artwork and didn’t want to spend any more money. :)
What adds to the interest of the typewriter on the wall is the black and white graphic print above. It really speaks to me. I was thinking when I wrote the word secretary that no one uses that word anymore but I still like it. Perhaps administrative assistant is more descriptive as we really ran everything, but it seems like a mouthful to me. Your typewriter looks like a 1920s portable Royal. That is my favorite vintage typewriter. I love the finish, the keys, and the action. I have sold those in my shop for 300.00, in like new condition, to young people, lawyers and people decorating offices. Red and green always sell. I always find something new to discover on your blog and this post was a particular favorite because it so clearly demonstrates the difference color makes. I like the charcoal, as I said, but I do love those colors that change throughout the day. It is so cool that you painted the first floor in the same color…I bet you get all sorts of variations throughout the day. Good to hear from you, Ann.

I love the look of your breakfast nook now. I think my favorite thing is the typewriter on the wall, how unique!
Tania
Thank you so much Tania! It was nice of you to stop by and leave a comment. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week!
Wow Ann, I love that new paint color! Did it ever brighten up the room!! I love the idea of hanging the typewriter on the wall. What a clever idea! I have one like it and it is so darn heavy. Just wondering how you did it? Love all of the pillows and the school desk! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Thank you Jann, I love the new paint too. It feels so fresh. You’re right, the typewriter is very heavy but I just distributed the weight between two nails and hung it from the back “lip”. It seems totally secure…
Very cute space! I love the addition of the pillows, and what a cool idea to hang the typewriter as an art piece.
Hi Erin! Thanks for taking the time to comment and for your kind words. Enjoy the holiday weekend!
What a charming makeover! I love the way the light walls and open windows really brighten this space! Found you linked up at French Country Cottage!
Hi there! I’m happy you stopped by. Thank you for your sweet comments!
I also want to know how you hung that typewriter. Those things are HEAVY! Such a clever idea!
Yes they are very heavy! Mine has a sort of lip on the back so I just distributed the weight between two nails. I suppose one could use screws, they might be even more secure. Thank you for your comment!
Your nook turned out fabulous! Thanx for joining THT. Hope your weekend is going well.
Thank you Pamela!

Like everyone I like the typewriter on the wall instead of a table but I also like the print above it. Can you tell me where to purchase it?
Hi Kathy! My ABC’s of Life plaque was a gift but I looked around online and found the best price here http://goo.gl/mW5cym
