Girls Want Pearls #39: Blinged Out Sunglasses

Welcome to Girls Want Pearls #39! It’s so nice to have you here. I can’t go outside without my sunnies, mostly for the glare but of course to look cool too. So today I’m going to show you something that is trending right now in fashion, blinged up sunglasses!

I’m cheating a little with my first example. This is a picture of a pair of vintage sunglasses that I sold several years ago.

They were covered with pearls and tiny sea shells when I bought them.

And here is my version for today…

Glue on pearls, jewels, buttons, shells etc. with an adhesive of your choice, I recommend using E-6000. I could have gone further, adding them to the front as well.

Girls Want Pearls #38: Pearl Daisies + My Swap Item Sneak Peek

Welcome to another edition of Girls Want Pearls! This is #38 in a series of 52 posts on the wonderful pearl ~ ways to repurpose it, wear it, and decorate with it.

Spring has finally sprung and flowers are popping up everywhere! Yay! For today’s project I raided by button stash and grabbed some pearls, wire, and twigs from the yard to create…
daisy1a
daisy1
To create the daisy I simply threaded the wire through the back of the button and, using one long continuous strand of wire, threaded pearls on and looped each petal, twisting together in the back before creating the next loop. Then I attached the flower to the twig with wire.

You can glue on lace or burlap leaves to complete the look.

And here’s a peek at what I’ll be swapping at my new link up Drop It or Swap It over the next 3 weeks…

Girls Want Pearls #37: Turn Ordinary Sandals Into Gladiators + My Swap Item

Happy Monday! I hope your Easter holiday was a joyous celebration of the love of the Savior. I started the day by going to church with my husband, where we were joined by our daughter, son-in-law and three grand children. Our son and daughter-in-law live a couple hundred miles away and were unable to join us. They always come home for the holidays but he had to work. I was a little sad because it also happened to be my son’s birthday. We’ll all get together next weekend. I’ve learned that it doesn’t really matter the exact day we celebrate, as long as we’re together I’m happy.

So on to our Girls Want Pearls project. It’s #37 in the 52 week series! It’s time for some fashion! The last two weeks were decor related, and I tend to alternate between decor and fashion in these posts. Today I want to show you how to glam up your sandals with pearls.

In the first idea, I’ll give an ordinary pair of sandals…
sandals_step1

A gladiator look!

You’ll need:
4 strands of pearls, approx. 33 inches long
8 jewelry jump rings
4 jewelry clasps (lobster clasp or similar)
loose pearls for embellishing

Preparing and attaching pearl strands:
Open a jump ring and hook around your sandal strap as shown. Thread one end of a pearl strand into the ring and close.
sandals_step2c
Then thread the other end of the pearl strand onto a jump ring and attach your clasp to that ring. Repeat these steps on all 4 strands.

Wrapping the pearls:
Take both loose ends of the pearl strands that are now attached to your sandal and pull up to make sure they are even in length. Tie them at the back of your leg above your heel, then tie in a knot.
sandals_step1b
Next, criss cross the strands to the front of your leg, then to the back, then to the front again, then to the back until you have wrapped them four times.
sandals_step1c
Bring both strands to the front and criss cross forming an X as shown before attaching the clasp to the ring on each side.

I wanted to tie in the look even more so I added three loose pearls into the sandal design. You can do this in one of two ways: put a straight pin through the pearl, loop the pin around with a small pair of pliers then sew onto the sandal strap; or just sew the pearl onto the strap without the pin.

For the second look, I embellished some fringe sandals by sewing on small strands of pearls that I strung and knotted, wrapping and hiding the knotted ends at the underside.

So, time to go get a pedicure or give yourself one. Mix it up and choose a color you’ve never dared to use before! And then go have fun showing off your toes and sandals!

I hope you’ll come back Wednesday and join the new link up Drop It or Swap It. The link up runs from Wednesday through Sunday night so you can have plenty of time to shop around other blogs to see what you would like to swap for. Early birds can link up Tuesday night beginning at 7 PM.

Here’s what I will be offering for swap.
keys
I know there are a lot of creative people that could do something really cute with these crusty rusty keys, 2 dozen of them to be exact. The keys have now been swapped with Donna from Distressed Donna Down Home!

And my item from the last swap didn’t get taken so I’m offering it again too. This cute striped pair of Tommy Hilfiger shoes, size 7 1/2.

Girls Want Pearls #36: He Is Risen

Easter week is here and spring is in full bloom here in Missouri. I find it very invigorating to see things start to green up. What was once dead and brown is now alive again. Welcome to week #36 of Girls Want Pearls. Last week I shared a project using twigs and pearls to create a rustic cross. You can see it here.

This week I am going to show you how to create an entire scene around that cross.
crosspart2-1
crosspart2-2
To create the scene you’ll need:
*twigs
*wire
*glue
*moss, sheet type or other
*flower frogs or styrofoam
*platter or shallow basket
*fresh or faux flower blossoms
*approx. 100 pearls
*the pearly cross from the prior tutorial
crosspart2-step1
Create 2 more crosses using the twigs, wire and glue.
crosspart2-step2
crosspart2-step3
Arrange 3 flower frogs or 3 pieces of styrofoam on your platter as shown, with the one in the center elevated above the other two.
crosspart2-step4
Cover the area with moss, leaving a small opening around the center of each flower frog or styrofoam piece. Place the crosses and cover the rest of the way with moss. (Hint: if using the spike type of frogs, you’ll want to tap the twigs onto the frog using a hammer prior to putting them in place.)

Creating the pearl “Risen”:
Cut a piece of wire approx. 2 feet long (long enough to string on 100 pearls)

String the pearls, leaving 3 inches of uncovered wire on each end of the strand

Put a kink or a knot after the last pearl on each end, then fold the exposed wire in half and twist. You will use these ends to poke into the moss once you’ve created the pearl word.

With the wire end facing to the bottom, start forming the “R” and continue with each letter as shown.
crosspart2-3
It will take some bending and smooshing (pretty sure I use that word in almost every tutorial) to tweak the letters and give them the desired look.

Place “Risen” at the bottom of the hill, curving slightly toward the back, poking in the wire ends.
Sprinkle tiny flowers onto the moss with a light hand. Arrange larger blossoms or buds around the base of the center cross (I used magnolias but any faux flower will work).
crosspart2-4
Enjoy your creation, and let it bring a sense of the beauty of the cross and the indescribable love of the Savior to your heart and home.

Girls Want Pearls #35: The Old Rugged Cross

Happy Monday and Welcome to Girls Want Pearls #35! I love the old hymns, and “Were You There” has always been a favorite of mine at Easter time. I also love “O Sacred Head Surrounded.” Do you have any favorites?

Today’s project is an “old rugged cross” made of twigs with an addition of a pearl wire garland.
cross1cross2
Forming the cross:
Find two twigs that are somewhat straight and of the thickness you desire. Break or cut them as needed. Glue the two twigs together to form a cross. I wrapped wire around mine to keep them together while the glue was drying.
cross5

Preparing the garland:
Cut two lengths of wire, about double the size of each twig. String pearls of various sizes onto the smaller wire, spacing them somewhat randomly. String pearls on the larger wire in the same manner until you reach a little beyond the halfway point. At that point string on 4 larger pearls, with a smaller pearl in between. This section will be wrapped around the intersection of the cross later. Continue stringing the pearls until you fill the wire as shown.
cross6
Put a kink in the wire before and after each pearl to hold them in place.
cross7
Wrapping the garland onto the cross:
Start by wrapping the horizontal twig, using the smaller garland. Secure in place with glue if needed. Wrap the vertical twig with the larger garland, starting with the end that the large pearls are closest to.
cross8
When you get to the intersection of the cross, position the large pearls around the center, then continue the rest of the way down the vertical twig.
cross3
That’s it, your cross is complete!
I titled this post Part 1 because next week I’m going to show you how to create a scene with this cross placed in it.

And I musn’t forget to invite you to the very first Drop It or Swap It link up, this Wednesday! (it will be open for links starting Tuesday at 7PM Central). So get your swap item ready and show us what you’ve got!
