Vintage Houndstooth Dress + Red Pops

I found this vintage dress in December while shopping with a friend at the West Bottoms in KC. It was one of those glorious moments where you catch a glimpse of something and it has a glow emanating from it (it seems). A corner of vintage dresses and this one called out to me, so I tried it on, skeptical that it would fit. Well, I was wrong and it fit perfectly! How happy was I!

A bargain at only $20, so even though I wasn’t really shopping for myself that day, I had to snag it. Don’t you agree?

I added a red belt and red boots to give it an updated punch. I was freezing in these pictures, can you tell?

The weekend before last our family celebrated my birthday and went to a dinner theater. Here are some shots of us having fun!

The play was called Never Too Late and featured George Wendt from Cheers. It was fun to see him in person! And I never pass up a chance to spend time with family.

Girls Want Pearls #25: I Heart Pearls

Welcome to Girls Want Pearls #25! Whew, I’m so happy to be over here in my new place. Getting here was quite the ordeal! I think there are still a few issues to work out, so please bear with me. I haven’t regained GFC so if you were following me with that you might want to follow by email instead. So, on with the pearls!

This week I was inspired by my vintage pearl and pear garland (see it here). With Valentine’s Day coming right up I have hearts on the brain. Here’s what I came up with to deck out a tree, window or chandelier.

heartgarland1
heartgarland2What you’ll need:
pearl strand
ornament dough or imitation marzipan
food coloring
sugar
large kitchen knife
waxed paper

I used imitation marzipan for this illustration but it can sometimes crack when drying. The sugar helps to conceal that fact but ornament dough might be a better choice. Here’s the marzipan recipe I used to make about 18 hearts:
1/3 cup flour
2 T butter
8 oz powdered sugar
1/4 cup water
food coloring
Boil water and butter. Add flour and stir until you can form a ball that doesn’t stick to the pan. Let cool, add powdered sugar and mix until the dough is easy to manage. Add food coloring.

Here’s a link to a no-bake ornament dough recipe.

Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place on waxed paper. Flatten balls with a knife.

Cut flattened ball in half. Pinch the bottom of each half, forming a sort of triangle.

Now make a pearl sandwich, enclosing a section of pearls with each half of the dough. Push, poke and pinch the dough until it becomes the desired heart shape.

Adding the sugar
Spray the heart with adhesive and sprinkle on the sugar. I used two coats. You can color your own sugar with food coloring or buy it already colored. Allow to air dry, shake off the excess and you have a finished, festive, flirty heart garland.

About my new look, what do you think? As I started out to design a new banner my thought process went something like, “I have to keep it light and airy,” because I love that look. But as I started creating, the hopeless romantic in me was asserting herself into my design. I tried to shush her but I kept hearing the mantra, “Be true to yourself.” So, here’s a confession, I’m really not that light, I’m much more melancholy. And so this is what I came up with. It is authentically me. Moodiness and all. Moody’s okay. Moody’s me. I just don’t want it to read dark and gloomy. Is it too gloomy? I would love your feedback.

Thanks for visiting me in my new place!

Official Blog Announcement and Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday! I hope it’s been a good week for you and that you are as excited as I am about the weekend. My husband, kids and spouses have a fun day planned for tomorrow. We’re going to a dinner theater to see a comedy and eat good food! It has become a tradition that one of the gifts we buy our kids every Christmas is tickets to some function, usually a concert or a stand-up comedian. So we’re trying something different this year and I know it will be a great time coz we’ll be with each other and we always have a good time together.

So the real reason for my post is to let you in on / remind you of some big blog news for me. It’s official! I’m moving my blog to WordPress! It’s been quite a lot of prep work and I’m so excited that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I’m very invested in learning to be the best blogger I can be so I think this is a step in the right direction. My last post on Blogger will be this Monday’s Girls Want Pearls post. I’m hoping to keep my google friend connect followers, if the transition goes as planned, so it shouldn’t affect that (fingers crossed). And it should redirect from my old blog, so we’ll see. I hope you’ll keep coming by, I love having you as readers and friends.

Black, White and Vintage

Woohoo, we still have 9+ weeks of winter! Lots of opportunities to rock my numerous vintage coats! I’m trying to look on the bright side here. I’m not a huge fan of winter, love the snow hate the cold. My vintage coats do a great job of keeping me toasty while I’m out in it though. They’re made really well with generous amounts of fabric, really heavy and warm. At the risk of sounding old, they just don’t make ‘em like they used to!

I love to mix vintage and modern in both my wardrobe and home furnishings.
Have you ever owned a vintage coat?
Stay warm!
